Legislation that would remove legals from newspapers and put them exclusively online has been committed to the S.C. House Judiciary Committee for study.
The action came on a voice vote. The response reportedly was a loud and positive vote to send the bill to committee.
The Wednesday action came after a point of order was raised Tuesday that the bill had not been on the calendar for 24 hours. Action was then delayed a day.
Opponents of the bill, including the S.C. Press Association, argue that newspapers remain the best place for legal notices to be seen by the most people.
Legal ads include public hearings, estate notices, foreclosures, probate action, notices of sales, summons, bid notices, beer and wine licenses and abandoned vehicles and boats.
The Times and Democrat has stated: “They are an integral part of the daily newspaper and should continue to be.”
